METRIC

MICHAEL RIGLEY X LEARN SQUARED, 2017

CREATIVE DIRECTION | CONCEPT DESIGN | PRODUCTION

Metric is a design study developed as part of the Design for Production training series with Learn Squared. The project operates as both a formal exploration of design principles and a framework for teaching process, using a shared brief centered on three concepts: volume, density, and mass.

The project establishes a structured approach to developing visual systems from abstract prompts, translating open-ended ideas into resolved design and motion.

STILLS

PROCESS

Development followed the same brief assigned to students, using volume, density, and mass as starting points for ideation. Early stages focused on sketching, composition, and styleframe development, establishing a visual direction that could extend into motion.

The work was designed to be decomposed into clear stages, aligning creative decisions with production workflows. Key phases include boardomatic, animatic, rough cut, and final composition, each defining a step in the transition from concept to finished piece.

The study emphasizes repeatable methods, focusing on how decisions are made, refined, and translated across design and production rather than on isolated techniques.

Application + DOCUMENTATION

While developed within a teaching context, Metric functions as a standalone piece. The project demonstrates how abstract constraints can resolve into a cohesive visual system through structured iteration and controlled development.

The resulting work reflects a balance between formal exploration and production logic, establishing a methodology that can be applied across a wide range of projects.
