MARATHON | ANNOUNCEMENT TRAILER

ANTIBODY, 2023

INTERFACE DESIGN | ASSET CREATION | PRODUCTION

Developed in early 2023, this project involved the creation of interface and screen-based assets for the announcement trailer of Marathon, a new IP from Bungie. The work was produced in collaboration with Antibody under the direction of Patrick Clair and Raoul Marks, and focused on extending the project’s visual systems through graphic and motion-based design.

The contribution centered on the development of screen graphics, interface elements, and glitch-driven visual content intended to operate within the narrative logic of the trailer. These assets were conceived as diegetic components—suggesting internal technologies, artificial intelligence processes, and unstable information states rather than presenting explanatory overlays.

Look development and animation emphasized texture, signal disruption, and temporal irregularity. Interfaces were designed to exist at the threshold between legibility and degradation, informed by the idea of computational systems operating under constraint or partial failure. AI avatar elements were explored as representations of presence mediated through noise, compression, and abstraction.

While the scope of the work was focused, the project provided a contained environment for investigating system-driven interface design within an established fictional universe. The assets were developed to participate in the trailer’s broader visual language, prioritizing coherence with its tonal and conceptual framework over standalone resolution.

STILLS

UI + graphics process

The screen graphics were developed with several parallel objectives. A primary consideration was establishing a graphic language that aligned with the game’s broader art direction while clearly operating as interface—distinct from physical markings or environmental decals within the world. This separation allowed the graphics to function as a mediated layer, suggesting internal systems and machine perception.

Additional focus was placed on defining a visual treatment for the AI avatars appearing within the interfaces. These elements were designed to register as present yet unstable, shaped by stylization choices in color blocking, signal distortion, and glitch behavior. Iteration played a central role throughout the process, with repeated testing and refinement used to calibrate clarity, density, and tone until the system resolved into a coherent visual framework.
