DOLBY DIMENSION LOOK DEV

Michael Rigley for Dolby Laboratories Inc.

When Dolby invited us to participate in the brand development for Dolby Dimension, they were well underway with brand assets for the new product. Our primary objective: explore the potential audio-visual forms for the blurred figures within the existing branding. What would these shapes look like, what kind of life would they take, and how would they behave once they were pulled into focus?

DESIGN PROCESS

Tasked with visualizing sound, we wanted to develop a variety of solutions with various visual applications, pursuing a wide range of graphic systems that could function as audio visualizations. Ultimately, we explored four different formal approaches: meshes, fluids, particles and strings. The resulting solution became a combination of several visual explorations encountered throughout the process.

It was important to develop a unique behavior for the elements, as string and particle systems have been overused, especially in the space of sound visualization. We treated the systems as fluid deformations rather than turbulent fields. As a result, we built a system that behaves as if it were suspended in fluid, physically swirling and reacting to sound.
